Coin and Paper Money Collecting/price of Morgan silver dollars
Expert: PAPAJACK - 12/6/2006
QuestionCould you give me a ballpark idea of what my 1891cc and 1897 coins are worth? Both are uncirculated. Thank you.
AnswerHello Carlee,
On the coin grading scale from 1 to 70 there are 11 Uncirculated grades from Mint State-60 to Mint State-70.
I know very few specimens grade higher than MS-64 in the Morgan Dollar series. Any pre 1905 Morgan grading MS-64 or higher needs to be authenticated and is usually auctioned off to the highest bidder thus the great ranges in value.
These value ranges are from some price guides over the past 6 months. The range is from dealer price and retail estimates.
A true Uncirculated coin has no wear and plenty of mint luster. Even if it has toned over time the surface must be pristine. For highest values the coin must not have any problems like dents, bends or having ever been cleaned. The next grades down are Almost Uncirculated Grade 50 to 59.
1891 CC Uncirculated Morgan Dollar
AU-50= $140 to $215, MS60=$250 to $360, MS63=$645 to $920, MS64=$1.050 to $1,475 MS65=$3700 to $5,300,
1897 Uncirculated Philadelphia Morgan Dollar
AU-50= $22 or less, MS60= $23 to $34, MS63= $35 to $50, MS64= $50 to $70, MS65= $200 to $280
