Coin and Paper Money Collecting/question on PENNY'S

Question
I NEED TO FIND OUT ABOUT A SILVER PENNY.1943 D.

Answer
Actually, this isn't silver but rather zinc plated steel.  In 1943, copper was needed for the war effort, so they decided to make the cents out of steel.  Because steel rusts, they coated it with zinc.  Quite a few of them were made, about a billion in total; and about 217 million at the Denver mint, which is what you have (that's what the D stands for).  If you go to www.ebay.com and do a search for 1943D cent or 1943D penny, I bet you'll find some for sale.  Jim Lawniczak
