Question
QUESTION: What is the value of a 1990 liberty silver dollar?

ANSWER: Hello Eric,

I need more information to help you. There were no silver dollars made in 1990 for circulation.
Are there any other motto's or dates on this coin?
Does it say 999 fine on it? What images are in the designs?

It may be a US Silver Bullion coin.

Please get back to me with any more information you can and I will find it in a catalog for you.

Thank You and Good Luck

Answer
Hello again Eric,

Thank you for selecting me for your answer.

This is called a US Silver Eagle. Although the coins states One Dollar on it is worth the current value of one ounce of silver plus a premium as a coin to coin collectors.

In 1986 the US started selling silver and gold in the form of coin.  It does not need to be assayed before reselling. Now any body can own Silver or Gold and even Platinum bullion for Investment, IRA or any reason.

The gold come in Tenth Ounce, Quarter Ounce, Half Ounce and One Full Ounce coins with $5, $10, $25 and $50 dollar face values, but the Silver Eagle only comes in the One Ounce size with a $1.00 face value denomination. The Treasury by law has to place a denomination on any coin it makes; I do not know how it is decided.
The most recent US Platinum Eagle coins have Tenth Ounce $10, Quarter Ounce $25, Half Ounce $50 and One Full Ounce coins with $$100 face value denominations.

Market value rises and falls with the price of metals on modern bullion coins. The weight of the coin is divided into the price per Troy Ounce.   You may get as much as $185 dollars from a collector that wants it.

Important, let me add that there are also Proof Coins Made.

The Proof Versions of the coin sell at higher prices, from 30% to 100% more depending on the date and condition. Proofs have a Mirror like Background and Frosted Devices making them stand out. They are also in holders as to not damage the delicate surface
