Question
I have seen on eBay the advertising of unopened silver proof sets. How can I tell if these coins are really the silver proof or not? What does the printed mark 1957 P.C. in the left hand corner of the envelop mean?

Answer
Hi Charlene,

1957 P.C. on the envelopes is the designation that the Mint put on the Proof Set envelopes from 1955 to 1964 -- it stands for Proof Coins.

All proof sets from 1964 and older are the silver sets.

Without opening the package, you cannot be 100% sure of what you've got.  All I can suggest is to buy from somebody with a high number AND high % positive feedback.

There is also an eBay guide about this subject here :

I hope this helps,

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
