Expert: PAPAJACK - 3/22/2007
QuestionI am curious to know the value of 2 Items I have. The first is a $1 1935 Silver Certificate with a blue seal and the serial #H56858029D, series 1935B., with a green back and there is no in god we trust on it. It has been in circulation, however it has been in a photo album for the last 10 years.
The second is a $5 federal note I bought from a vendure about 17 years ago it has never been in circulation& has its own case. The only thing is there is a slight fold on the corner. It has a red seal and serial numbers. They are C60338854A. The series is 1953 C. It has a green back with just the Lincoln Memorial on it. Can you please let me know what they are worth?
AnswerHello Tara,
These notes are not rare and common in circulated condition.
Only after the grade is determined can you use a price guide, or can it be properly appraised.
The main Grades are FINE, EXTRA FINE and CRISP UNCIRCULATED.
I saw in an older catalog it has a retail list of $2 in Very Fine condition, $3 for Extra fine and $10 in crisp Uncirculated condition.
You need to look a bit closer at your $5 note. Besides the Series year and if there is a letter after the date. What does it say across the top (above the portrait) United States Note, Federal Reserve Note.
The red seals are usually United states notes not silver certificates.
1953C FIVE DOLLAR UNITED STATES NOTE $9 in Very Fine condition, $14 for Extra fine and $35 in crisp Uncirculated condition.
There is a person listing fixed prices at the URL below, copy the link into the address bar on your computer.
