Collectibles-General (Antiques)/150 yr old trunk

Question
I inherited a 150 year old trunk from my grandparents. It has a queen's crest on top and is numbered. But it is covered mostly with black leather and it is getting SO dry that the leather is starting to flake off. Is there something I can use to soften (?) the leather and still keep the value?

Answer
Hi Betty
Nice to hear from you.
Betty they make a special lotion for leather to keep it supple.
I would try the hardware, or perhaps a leather store.
It was recommended that we care for our leather by using this twice a year on the Antiques road show...now who could argue with that LOL.
But check carefully that the product is the correct one.
I recall that we do not want one that contains silicone, but I could be wrong there.
Here are 2 sites with the correct product.

Hope this helps
Kindest Regards

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
