Question

picture of the cabinet
Hello,

I have this 101 year old china cabinet that has some wood work over the glass that has chipped in two spots.  I would like to fix that, in addition to repairing a few nicks and the overall appearance of the cabinet since it is scratched up and shows its age.  Any advice on how to do this without hurting the value of it?  I have attached a picture.

Answer
Hi Sandy
Nice to hear from you.
Less is best here Sandy.
From your picture I see nothing significant that needs fixing and your cabinet should show its age. I hope I look as good at 101 LOL.
Seriously all I would do is dab on a bit of stain to conceal the lighter areas. This could also be done with one of those wax colored filler sticks if the scratch is deep.
The cabinet certainly does not look like the wood needs cleaning or waxing and it looks in wonderful condition.
Wish I had it.
Happy Holidays

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
