Collectibles-General (Antiques)/1939/40 Lane Cedar Blanket Chest

Question
I inherited my Mother's Walnut veneer solid walnut blanket chest she received from my Grandmother as a wedding present in 1939 or 1940. It has a combination lock with key lock. The chest was severely damaged (not repairable) during a recent move and I'm trying to find info as to original cost, current value, replacement cost, etc., for the freight damage claim. Do you know of any entity that can help me. Thanks

Answer
Hi Larry
Nice to hear from you.
So sorry this has happened to your cedar chest.
You can contact Lane directly for some of the info you seek.

I just had a look at the site and it seems they do not give estimates of current value though.
In my humble opinion, and for insurance purposes only, I feel a figure of $300.00 is not out of line in this case.
While this is not an antique, I would certainly say it was a family heirloom.
Good Luck with this and be sure to cantact Lane.
Kindest Regards

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
