Question
I have a Thomasville Living Room set (French Provincial style). It is a sofa, love seat and winged chair. The wood on it is in beautiful condition and it's desgn very detailed. The uppolstry and springs are shot. The upolstry was silk threading. It's a sentinmental set and my question to you is: cost wise is it worth saving and if so how do I go about finding a service that will do a quality job?

Answer
Hi Terri
Nice to hear from you.
I am of the opinion that furniture made in the 70's is superior in construction than todays.
You obviously like this set very much and the wood is in great shape so why not get some quotes from local upholstery shops.
Just walk in the door and look at their work to see if its quality. Ask for references..any good shops are happy to provide them.
When you get a couple of quotes, compare what new furniture will cost.
Hope this helps
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
