Question

Marble top washstand
I have an early 1900's marbletop washstand that was in excellent condition.  In my last move the marble cracked in half.  I was wondering how having this repaired affects the value of the piece or would it be better to replace the marble completely.

Answer
Hi Julie
Nice to hear from you.
What a lovely piece.
What a shame the marble was broken.
In the right hands, marble can be fixed.
Pretty costly I would imagine but I would check out the cost of replacement vs. a new top.
Personally I would like the original top repaired.
Once this is done I do not feel it will effect the value of the piece as the repair should not be apparent.
And I feel you would look long and hard to find a similar piece of marble.
Good luck and great question
Regards
Eileen

CommentThank you so much. The insurance company is paying to fix it so it will be done right. I have selected a repair business to do the work that is very knowledgeable of marble and does beautiful work.

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
