Question
I need to separate the seat portion from the rockers of an antique rocking chair. I have been able to get three of the legs out from the seat but the fourth leg will not cooperate. I have tried vinegar, but no luck. Any suggestions and Thanks. JR

Answer
Hi JR
Nice to hear from you.
Check to make sure there is not a small nail or screw in the joint.
They can be very hard to see at times.
Are you using hot vinegar?
I find this works every time.
Keep a dish of hot vinegar at hand and keep dipping a rag into it and applying to the joint. When the rag cools, dip again in hot vinegar. Always wrap the hot rag around the joint.
Just pouring hot vinegar on will not do it.
The idea is to keep the area hot till the glue softens.
It could take a few applications so be patient.
Heat can also be applied with a heat gun if you have one.
Never use force.
Hope this helps

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
