Question

Side View of the Chair
I am looking for a couple more of these chairs in the exact same style but every search I do, I come up empty.  I'd like to know what style, period, etc so I can perhaps get better luck this time around.  I'm also looking for parts for this particular rocker so I can fix this one up.

I've enclosed pictures for your review.  The chair has been recovered a few times and right now is in need of some repairs.

Thank you for any help and answers you may be able to offer.

Answer
Hi Sarah
Nice to hear from you.
Sarah this is a very common type chair.
Its called a platform rocker.
The design came about many years ago in attempt to save wood floors and also solve the problem of rocking chairs moving across the floor when people used them.
Pretty innovative for its time I think.
I would not class this particular chair as antique however.
Sarah back in the 60's, here in Canada where I am, everyone wanted this style of furniture. It was called colonial. All of it was made of maple so it was called Colonial Maple.
Your chair is very reminiscent of this style although I think it was made in the 40's or 50's.
If you are looking for springs, they are still readily available here

If the inner springs are broken, they are available too.
Narrow your search for similar chairs to old used furniture places, thrift stores or auction sales where seniors lived. Both my parents had this type of chair as they were so comfortable and we kids were "advised" to stay out of them.
Good Luck with your search and thanks for this question. It brought back nice memories.

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
