Collectibles-General (Antiques)/secretary desk

Question
I have a family secretary desk from about 1939. Above the desk is a bookcase with glass doors. On each door there is a grill made up of thin pieces of wood that are falling apart. I would like to replace them but I don't even know what they are called. Can you give me any ideas on how I could locate such items.
thanks
Michael

Answer
Hi Michael
Nice to hear from you.
I call this lattice work or fretwork Michael.
Don't know if thats the correct name or not, but they are very easy to duplicate.
If you have the old pieces any wood shop with a scroll saw should be able to make them.
Possibly a query here may be helpful too, but I think you will have to get them made.

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
