Collectibles-General (Antiques)/Pewter Candlesticks

Question
Hello Martin,
I sent you a question earlier about a pair of pewter candlesticks purchased by my friend... thanks for your reply, and further to that question I now have photos of the candlesticks and the 4 pseudo hallmarks on the base. These are the only markings on the pieces. I'd be interested to know what you make of them.
The photos are attached.
Thanks and regards,
Tony
Answer-
Hello Tony,
The pseudo-hallmarks are not known to me, and do not seem to be recorded. There is little doubt these are cast pewter candlesticks, not silver plate as I had suspected, but marks of this type (using gothic letters as the initials of the firm, in several punched reserves imitating British silver hallmarks) are something I associate with silver plate rather than pewter.
However, in my view the solution to this conundrum lies in the date they were made. Details of the style and condition of the 'sticks in the photos strongly suggest to me that these are of recent manufacture, perhaps dating from the mid 20th Century. The usual conventions of marking really did not apply at this time.
Regarding the interpretation of the letters in the marks, the most likely reading for me is S E & S, but 'black letter' (as it is correctly known) is notoriously difficult to read when the letters are removed from the context of a word - the 2nd stamp is especially tricky, though I do believe it must be a letter rather than a graphic device.
Hope that is helpful.
Martin
