Collectibles-General (Antiques)/chair seat

Question
I have an office chair, wood with arms and spindles between the arms and seat as well as ornate spindles down the back between the carved top and seating area.  It swivels and adjusts in height through an old cast iron mechanism underneath the seat.  The seating area is a hard leather-like round piece with a winged dragon standing on a torch as best as I can tell, slightly worn.  The leather piece is held in place by brass topped tacks.  What period and where would this type of piece come from, if you know.  Thanks

Answer
These leather seats have been around for a long time, at least since the mid 1800s.Some were put on as the original seat in a chair but many more were sold as replacements for damaged cane seats. One could go to the "General Store" and buy one of several shapes and trim to fit over the broken cane seat and attach with the brass upholstery nails. You can get new leather or a leather "look a like" today but the choice of designs is limited.
Your seat needs some leather treatment to keep it looking good and flexible to prevent cracks and checks from starting.
 Thanks for your question,
 Rob
