Collectibles-General (Antiques)/cleaning danish cord seat

Question
My husband bought a teak table set with woven seats at a garage sale.  The seats are a woven cord, I am assuming Danish cord since they look like thin rope. One is badly stained.  How do I go about cleaning this without adding to the damage?  Also I would like to clean the other chairs as well.
Thanks.

Answer
Thanks for your question,
Danish cord usually does not have a finish on it and since it's made of woven paper, you are limited in what you can do to clean it. I would start with a soft brush and water and dish soap. Try brushing on the bottom of one chair to see if there will be a problem. Don't flood the seat with water. Brush it some with the soap/water, then go over again with just water then let it dry. You should be able to see if it's cleaned it and if there would be any problem getting it wet.
After a day or 2 if there are no problems, go ahead and try the worst of the seats and see where you are. If that works to your satisfaction, go on to the other chairs. After cleaning, if your satisfied, go ahead and brush a coat of wipe on poly on the seats. The wipe -on is thinner then regular poly and will flow better into the cord.
Hope this helps and good luck,
 Rob
