Question

toy sewing machine
I have a small sewing machine I used as a child in the early 1950's - my grandmother had and we would sew doll clothes - I believe it made a chain stitch. No maufacturer except it says "Elbeco No.2" written on the bottom.  It's about 8" tall and 7" across.  I have contacted the "Elbeco Co." which has made safety uniforms for 100 years and they are checking there archives to see if it has something to do with their company, since I can't find a manufacturer by that name.  Perhaps you can help!  Thank you...(Photo attached.)

Answer
Hello Linda,
Sadly, I cannot find any specific information that relates to your description of "Elbeco No. 2".
The machine looks German to me and could possibly have been made by the F.W. Muller company of Berlin, Germany but I cannot be 100% sure without finding a photo of it and I do not want to guess.
Please send your query to Alex Askaroff (United Kingdom).  I'm hoping he may be able to answer your query or he might be able to put you in touch with someone who can positively identify your toy machine from the markings and without a country of origin. Please include the photo and description.

Good luck and I'm sorry I could not be sure.

Expertise

I have been a collector of antique sewing tools and thimbles for over 30 years. I am also a dealer in this field and sell on eBay under the name -- serengeti2. I am NOT, and I repeat NOT an expert on antique or vintage domestic household sewing machines used for everyday home sewing. I can offer help when it comes to TOY or miniature collectible sewing machines ONLY.
