Question

Two china water jugs w
My mother in law has two very pretty china water jugs with metal lids.  The are about 18 cm tall.  The lids may be Britannia metal and one has the mark "R BROADHEAD" and the other "BROADHEAD & ATKINS" - can you let me know an approximate age and value please?

Answer
Hello Carolyn,

You are absolutely correct that the lids are Britannia metal. That pewter alloy was used by many manufacturers in Sheffield, England, and that is where these two firms were located.

Broadhead & Atkin were active 1834-53, and were then succeeded by R Broadhead & Co., who went on until about 1900. As the two jugs appear to be a pair, and the metal parts appear identical, it seems they must have been made around the time of transition from Broadhead & Atkin to R Broadhead & Co., which gives you a very close date of c1853 for the jugs.

I cannot suggest a value as these are principally ceramic objects, which is not my field - I'm not aware of anyone amongst the pewter collecting fraternity who maintains a collecting interest in pewter mounted ceramics.

What I will say is that, while pewter lids are very common on  pottery, they are rarely marked, so these are academically interesting. Because of that, I wonder if you would mind if I copied this photo to the database of the Pewter Society as examples of pewter mounting made by Broadhead? You can reply to me at stynt@btopenworld.com

Hope that helps.
