Question
I've kind of stumbled into collecting what I call egg sewing kits. They're egg shaped, enameled, and inside have a thimble, thread, and needles. They seem to have been made mostly in Germany and Austria in the 1930's - at least as far as I can make out. And that is my question. Where can I learn more about these objects, not necessarily price but how and why they came about?

Answer
Hello Amanda.  There are a number of books out on the subject of sewing collectibles and an organization called Thimble Collectors International (TCI) that may interest you.  Although TCI's name emphasizes thimbles, they cover the scope of any and all sewing tools.  It sounds like you may be collecting "bullet" sewing kits, getting their name from the shape.  These can be cross collectibles as many had adversting on them.  They seemed to be the most plentiful in the 40s and 50s.  Sewing tool books appear on ebay regularly.  You can also check your local library or other on line book sources.  You may find a listing of books on the subject at the TCI web site.  http://www.thimblecollectors.com  or you can contact a local group near you on their club page.  Best of luck with your search.  Barbara
