Subject: Crocker Chair information

Question
I have a chair that belonged to either my Great Aunt or my Great Grandmother.  The tag on the underside says Crocker Chair Co. Sheboygan, Wis. but the No. is faded away. I looked on the State of Wisconsin's digital library but this chair doesn't seem to be part of 1924-1925 collection .  I was hoping you might be able to help me identify the year it's from or where I could find more information about it. I have a picture of the tag on the underside and side view as well if it would help.
Thank you

Answer
Susan - I am quite sure your chair pre-dates the 1924-1925 collection by some few years. By the mid 1920s most American furniture makers had moved past Arts & Crafts and GOlden Oak and were into the Colonial Revival movement.

Your chair is part of the Golden Oak period of American furniture from around 1880 to about 1920. Your chair was probably made in the 1895- 1910 period. You can see similar chairs in "American Wooden Chairs 1895 - 1908" published by Schiffer. It is the reprinted catalog of the Phoenix Chair Co of Sheboygan for 1908. I am sure you have seen this but just in case you haven't here is another site with some info about Crcker. http://www.sheboygan.lib.wi.us/pages/historyfurniture.html

Thanks for writing.
