Question
QUESTION: I know of an upcoming auction in my area that is advertising a Dentzel carousel horse, and I was wondering if you could give me some advice about how to tell whether or not this is an authentic antique and if there is a way to possibly tell the age. Also, would there be markings on this to identify it as a Dentzel horse? This horse is advertised as being repainted in the 1980s, does this affect the value? What could I expect this horse to sell for? I have only seen pictures online, the auction is in a few weeks. I would appreciate any help that you might be able to offer. Thanks!

ANSWER: I really can't offer you anything without seeing a photo.

QUESTION: Here is the link to the 3 photos of the horse...

These are the pictures I saw, I hope they give you an idea.  If you can't determine anything from the photos, then I apologize for taking up your time. Thanks!

Answer
Thanks for sending me the link to photos of this horse.  I'm glad you did!  This is NOT a Dentzel.  It's a contemporary carving produced by S&S Woodcarvers near San Francisco, CA.   This was probably produced between the 1980's and present.   S&S carves their horses by machine, then they finish them by hand.   If you're looking for an investment piece, you should pass on this.  These will depreciate in value as time goes on.
