Subject: Ivory Sewing Tool

Question
Hi!  I have an Ivory (I think) tool and I have no idea what it's function is.  The end holds a sewing needle, at least that was what was in it when I got it.  Hopefully the picture will be helpful.  Thanks in advance.  Sally

Answer
Hi Sally - without holding and inspecting the item, I can't say that it is ivory for sure, as bone and animal teeth were also used to carve sewing items.  If the brass part you hold between your fingers, in the picture, screws to the top of the ivory looking barrel, then you probably have a punch or awl.  They were used to make holes in fabric for certain types of needlework.  The hole would be made and then fancy stitches would bind the hole.  Hope I've helped.  Barb
