Question
QUESTION: Hi,
I have a plastic bull-dog shaped tape measure that is about 2" high. I inherited this when my great grandfather died back in the late 1970s, making it at least 20-something years old.The dog is white with black patches that cover each eye and ear.  The measure comes out of it's tail and curls right back into the plastic dog after you let it go.  Can you tell me anything more about it?

ANSWER: Hi Jackie - Without a picture, I am at a real loss of information for you.  However, there are at least three books out on tape measures.  You might check your local book store or library to see if you can find them.  They also appear on eBay frequently and Amazon may offer some of them too.  Condition is important to value, especially if the tape still works.  Sorry I couldn't be of more help.  Barb

QUESTION: Barbara,
Thank you for your response. Do you know the titles of those books so I can ask for them at the library?

Answer
Hi Jackie.  Your best bet is probably "Collecting Figural Tape Measures" by Elzabeth & Douglas Arbittier and Janet & John Morphy.  It has a price guide.  It was published by Schiffer Books.  Another good reference on tapes, but more advertising than figural, is "Collector's Digest Advertising and Figural Tape Measures" by L-W Books Sales.  The third eludes me at this time.  Good luck with your search.  Barb
