Question
Bill/Jan,

I have an old Fairbanks platform scales.  For most part it now works well since I have cleaned it up and replaced a few worn parts.  The platform is about 24 by 36" and the head sets about 5 foot off of the floor.  Inside of the round head there are two counter weights, one rectangular and the other round.  It also has a couple small weights that can be slid left or right on a beam.  The thing is also oil dampened.

My question is, how and/or which weights are used to adjust for different weight ranges.  By this I mean I weight about 190.  I can set it so it weighs me in at exactly 190.  However, when someone lighter than I or heavier gets on the thing their weight is somewhat off.  By anywhere from 5-9 pounds.  I would guess each one of the different sized weights in the head have a different effect on a certain weight range.  I have been all over the internet looking for information on how to correctly adjust the beast.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer
Hi Adam,

We have never serviced a scale like yours and they are much too big for most collectors.  You might be able to find an old scale man or a Fairbanks service center to adjust your scale.

Sorry we can't be of more help.
