About Irene Schwall
Expertise I have been a collector of antique sewing tools and thimbles for over 30 years. I am also a dealer in this field and sell on eBay under the name -- serengeti2.
Please note:
I am NOT, and I repeat NOT an expert on antique or vintage domestic household sewing machines used for everyday home sewing -- I can offer help when it comes to TOY or miniature collectible sewing machines ONLY.
Experience My expertise is in ANTIQUE sewing or needlework tools & thimbles, gold, silver, brass, ivory, bone etc. Modern thimbles are not necessarily my strong point but I may be able to help so don't hesitate to ask. I am also very well versed in the identification of Hallmarks on sewing collectibles.

Subject: Needles and Case
Question
QUESTION: I have a round wooden case that is approx. 9 1/2 in. long and 1/2 in. diameter. It separates in the center. It has the number "14" on the side (no other text) and has concentric rings turned at the ends and 1 near the center. No other markings. It contains 13 steel "needles" that are pointed (not extremely sharp) on both ends. Each needle is approx. 8 3/4 in. long.
Can you tell me what I have? Thank you.
ANSWER: Hello Paul,
Can you please send me a photograph?
Thanks.

QUESTION: Thank you for yourprompt reply Ms. Schwall. Please see the attached photo.
Answer Hello Paul,
Thank you for providing a photograph, this is most helpful.
What you have is a knitting needle case. The steel needles were used for knitting socks. With the #14 on the case, this indicates that the provenance is English. Size 14 needles = approximately 2mm in diameter in US sizing. The Boyd Needle Co. of the USA sold this sized needle as a #13.
I would date your item at early 1900's.
Without actually seeing the wood of your holder, it is hard for me to tell what it might be. These case were made in Poplar, Walnut, Olive Wood just to name a few.
I hope this helps.
Regards,
Irene
