Collectibles-General (Antiques)/Refinishing wood

Question
We have an old (1926) stinkwood (an African hardwood) dining table which has water and/or heat marks on the top and would like either to remove the marks. If not possible, what is the best way to refinish - the table has an oil finish? Thanks.

Answer
Hi Dorothy
Nice to hear from you.
The important thing to know with this is has the marks penetrated into the wood.
If so the finish will need to be replaced and the marks bleached out.
Fairly easy job with an oil finish but you still need stripper to do it.
If the marks are only in the oil its fairly simple to fix this type of finish.
I would rub out the marks with very fine grit sandpaper and apply more oil.
Did you want the full stripping info or are you familiar with this procedure?
Get back if needed

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
