Question
I found a chest and am wanting to sand and repaint. The piece
is tagged with a Showers Brothers Furniture emblem. It says
chest 1508 on back. It is not in great shape, but I thought it was interesting. The grain is quite rough feeling. Will it soak up the paint? Will it hurt to sand till smooth? I have no experience doing this. Help!!!!!!

Answer
Hi Della
Nice to hear from you.
If you want to sand and paint this chest thats fine as long as you understand there will be no going back to the wood look after this is done.
Just sand till smooth then apply a coat of good quality primer then two coats of paint.
It won't soak up any less or more than any bare wood.
I would use all water based paint.
Good Luck
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
