Question

Upholstered Chair
I found this straw filled chair with two wheels in the front legs at a garage sale for $5  I think the chair could make a beautiful piece but the seat cushion and back would both need upholstery cleaning and the cushion restuffed at the very least.  Is this an item worth spending my very, very, very limited resources on?  Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi Jamie
Nice to hear from you.
This is a lovely old Victorian chair.
Personally I am always drawn to these lovely old chairs but they always need to be re- upholestered.
Cost to do this would exceed 100.00 by a good bit and thats always the draw back.
And like you my resources are limited.
This chair would sell for about 100.00 in my neck of the woods so to answer you question.."Is it worth it"..the answer is no.
But what about learning to do this yourself.
I found this is the only way I can have all the old things things I love in my home on a limited budget.
And really this chair is not a hard fix with a bit of knowledge.
Its obvious you love old things too or you would not have bought this chair.
I can offer some guidance but there is so much info out there to help us.
Get back to me if you want some help.
Great question
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
