Question

Pewter Tankard
Thanks for all the times you have answered folks. You are extremely knowledgeable and I enjoyed reading many of your responses.
I found this one pint tankard marked on the bottom:
English Pewter
Made in Sheffield
England
It appears to be the exact shape of the current tankards still being made by this company although the decoration is not the same. It is hammered surrounded by 2 incised lines above and below the hammered area. The hammering is centered on the tankard and is approximately 2.5 inches in a band all around the piece.
There is a logo stamped on the upper portion of the outside of the item Niger Motors. Could you give me an indication of when this might have been produced and its value... Thanx in advance

Thanks for the kind words.

This mug (I know the makers call them tankards, but strictly that term should refer to lidded drinking vessels) is, as you say, of a style made through much of the second half of the 20th Century and still in production today. In fact there were/are several firms using the "English Pewter" mark, and this could have been made by any one of them.

Such pieces are offered as giftware, or, with inscriptions or other themed decoration, they be souvenirs. A Google search for Niger Motors gives a few clues about that firm - but you can do that look up yourself, as it has nothing to do with my specialism.

Value is unlikely to be significant. The only way pieces like this can command value is if they have famous associations, and that would depend on the evidence of the inscription.

CommentWOW-- I am impressed. You answered within 20 minutes of my post. Yes I did reference Niger Motors and it appears as though the latest this could be is in the mid-1970's. Still I consider it a decent find for a collector of Automobiliana.. Rich
