Question
Hi, I have just bought a beautiful light blue/green dining room table, it is painted of course, and needs a good cleaning.. but some of the paint has worn off on the corners and there are some chips in the wood.. would you suggest just cleaning it and using a wash of similiar color?  I would love any suggestions.  Thanks!

Answer
Hi Dana
Nice to hear from you.
A good cleaning first as you say.
I would use one of those citrus based cleaners.
And most certainly if you like the color and feel you can match the areas that are worn then try that first.
The chips can be smoothed with 120 grit sandpaper before your touch up.
And you have the option of a total new paint job if you dislike your touch ups.
But try to fix the finish first.
Great question
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
