Question

Teddy cruet
Hi! I purchased a small cruet set from a charity shop and am trying to find out a little more about it.
The cruet set is two teddy bears approx 4 cm high (and very heavy for their small height). The heads are removable by a sort of dovetail lock, for filling.
Where teddys "tail" would normally be there does look to be some kind of mark and the nearest I can find that looks like it is for AR Wentworth (an A and R with a W underneath) - although the mark is so small Im not 100! Next to this is what looks like a copyrite symbol - a c in a circle.
I did look on wentworths site and although they do teddy stuff, their teddy does not look like mine - also there is no mention of cruets so I may be barking up the wrong tree!

Can you tell me anything about them? I don't expect their worth much - I only paid a couple of pounds for them, however would love to know a bit more about them. They are the sort of thing you would give as a christening present maybe. Anyway, anything you could tell me would be helpful
Thank you
Sarah

Animal form casters (also known as shakers, peppers, etc.) are fairly common things, and come in many different forms, of which, for some reason, owls seem the most common. They are quite attractive and amusing things. The first examples were probably made in the mid 19th Century.

Yours are quite definitely by Wentworths. The C mark might be the mark for the Assoc of British Pewter Craftsmen, which means they could not be earlier than the mid 1970s. It may just be that Wentworths don't make that particular object any more - though they probably still have moulds, so could make more in the future.

Not worth very much, as you guessed, and they are not very old, but they are pleasant enough novelties.

CommentBlimey what a quick response! Didn't expect it for at least 24hrs!!! Thanks for your info, glad I know who they're by. Didn't expect them to be worth much to be honest but will go in my cupboard as a potential antique of the future!! Thanks, Sarah
