Collectibles-General (Antiques)/Repairing a tung oil finish

Question
Hi Eileen!
Eileen, I have another question for you...I was in a hurry to recover a footstool for my friend the other day, and stupidly used the staple gun with out a pad under it while working on my cherry dining room table. Yes I know..it was stupid of me....
Anyway, from the force of the staple gun, my table now has tiny  little dents in it!
But the good news is that this table had about 10 layers of a tung oil finish that I applied about 20 yrs ago..how do I go about repairing this finish?
Do I have to sand down the whole table top...or?
Thanks so much, Eileen,
Regards,
Dolores

Answer
Hi Again Dolores
Hopefully the marks are only in the finish.
Before sanding I would try fine steel wool.
Give the top a good going over on the entire surface paying particular attention to the dented areas.
Then a coat of tung oil.
After it dries, see if the marks are still showing.
If they are then the sandpaper is needed.
I would use a 220 grit carefully.
Usually tung oil finishes are easy to repair.
This should be.
Good Luck
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
