Collectibles-General (Antiques)/old howe scales

Question
My father owned a gold mine in nevada until 2002. I inherited two howe scales he used to weigh gold and I would like to know if they are worth anything. One is a smaller scale that will weigh 2400oz of troy. There was a number on the scale of 5308A1 and on the arm was a number listed as 8065.  The other scale is a bit larger. It will weigh up to 250lbs. The only number I can find on it is 3868 however I cannot lift it to see any other number on it. They were both approved for accurate weights in 1985. Any information you have will be helpful. Thank You.  Kathleen

Answer
Hi Kathleen,
The smaller of your two scales was shown in both the 1896 and 1902 Howe Scale catalogs.  They are described as follows: San Francisco Bullion Scales.  Troy standard, with brass weights and counterpoise. No. 365 Capacity: one quarter ounce to 2400 ounces, platform 10 x 14 inches, price $30. Retail value of this scale on today's market and complete with weights might be from $150-$350.

Your larger scale is what we believe to be called, in the same catalogs, ore  scales. They are described as follows: Ore Scales. Made entirely of metal, very strong and heavy. Beams graduated by one half pounds to 100 pounds.  Platform 45 x 35 inches. Retail value of these scales might be $75-$150.

In the event that these descriptions do not fit your scales.  Please feel free to send us photos at i-weigh-u@comcast.net.

Hope this helps.
