Question

pewter pitchers
I inherited a lot of antiques from my great aunt when she passed away.  There are three pewter items that I can't get any background or info on and I was hoping you might have some info on them.  I'm told they might be German, but that is just a guess.  Anything you might be able to tell me would really be appreciated.

On the left is a Glockenkanne (i.e. bell-shaped flask), of a style made in Germany and Switzerland. In the middle is the hexagonal version of the same thing, also German or Swiss style. On the right is a typical tankard or flagon of a general style made across many parts of central Europe.

If authentic, they will date to the late 18th or early 19th Century. There are very many reproductions of these types in circulation, made in the first half of the 20th Century. The majority one sees, especially in North America, are reproductions. So care is needed in authentication, and I could not give a definite opinion without handling them. Engraved dates, and convincing looking touchmarks, do not necessarily help with authentication, as the better repro makers copied touchmarks and applied convincing engraving.

CommentThank you for the info. I'm pretty sure these have been in our family since at least the 1800's so I'll treat them as authentic.
