Collectibles-General (Antiques)/Antique Hutch

Question
I have a piece of furniture from my grandmother and I am not sure of the correct name.  It is similar to a hutch but it has a counter top, 3 drawers on the bottom with a swing door (the bottom drawer is lined with tin).  The top has a bread drawer with 1 long door and 2 short on top of the bread.  I was just wondering what the correct name of this piece of furniture is? Thank you.

Answer
Hi Tracey
Nice to hear from you.
What you describe is called a "Hossier Cabinet".
Hossier was the name of a company that made these and the name sort of stuck although many companies made them.
I also hear them refferred to here in Canada as bakers cupboards.
Funny enough the genuine Hoosiers are the most sought after here.
The only way I see to ID a genuine one is by the label.
Look and see if yours has a label.
Great question
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
