About Eileen Cronk
Expertise
I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience
I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.

Collectibles-General (Antiques) - Chair identification

Expert: Eileen Cronk - 7/25/2008

Question
I recently purchased this chair at a thrift store.  The springs have since gone and I would like to have them fixed.  This is a pricey endeavor in NYC.  Question:  is it worth it to pay around $300.00 to replace said springs?  If so, should I reupholster while it is in repair?  The fabric seems to be original and in good shape.  And I like the stripes.

Best,

Michael

Answer
Hi Micheal
Nice to hear from you.
Its my opinion that the springs cannot be replaced on this chair without completely stripping the seat of everything.
It can be possible to replace one broken spring from underneath as I have done it, but not completely replace and tie all the springs.
The springs must be secured with cord to the top most section of the chair seat at the front, back and sides so you see it can't be done without stripping the material off.
Any anyone hoping to do this and just put the old material back is dreaming LOL.
The material will be ruined by taking it off.
Three hundred dollars to me would be a fair price to re-spring and re-upholster the entire chair...but I don't live in NY.
But I would not pay that to have the springs fixed even if it could be done.
Hope this helps
Regards
Eileen
