Question
My grandfather was a silversmith for Ketcham & McDougall and my grandmother was their bookkeeper. They met there and were married in 1910. Do you know of any of the kMd history or where I could find records from that time? I have quite a few kMd thimbles that I have collected. Thanks for your help.
Suzanne

Answer
Hello Suzanne.  How very exciting that you have a family tie to your thimble collection!  John von Hoelle printed a booklet in 1987 titled 'The Story of Ketcham & McDougall America's Premier Thimble Manufacturer'  It is 36 pages with black and white pictures.  As far as I know, it is out of print, but does show up once in awhile on eBay.  Last time I saw it for auction, the price was $45.  Gay Ann Rogers' American Silver Thimbles has a chapter on KMD.  You might be able to find that book through you local library.  I might be able to tell you more on your thimbles with digital pictures.  Feel free to contact me at bacchino@twcny.rr.com.  If I knew what state you were in, I might be able to refer you to a collector in your area.  Best of luck with your research.  Barbara
