Question

Top of quarter sawn oa
Hi Eileen,
Thank you for getting back to me so quickly! I'm pleased that it is confirmed oak, as I think it will handle our Canadian weather well. I've attached another picture of the top, which I'm pretty sure is solid oak and I believe it does need some work on it. The decorations seem to have been inset somehow into the piece. Would you recommend replacing the knobs? They don't seem to be as nice as the piece itself and they aren't really the same colour even.
Thank you for all your help (and Happy Canada Day too!)

Answer
Hi Again sue
Yes it appears there is damage on the top.
It looks like round marks (burns or water?)and also do I detect some oil stains?
Looks to me like just the top should be stripped and unfortunately sanded but if its black water marks they can "sometimes" be bleached out.
Could the decoration be done like those pressed back chairs we see?
Its hard to tell.
The knobs certainly don't seem to go with the piece.
Just keep your eye open for some replacements.
The back rooms of antique stores are a great place to look.
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
