Question
I have a veary dirty brass plate. I have tried to clean it with salt, vinegar, simple gree, soap, oxi-clean, and metal polish, but nothing works. Can you help?

Answer
Thanks for your question,
My first thought is that your plate has a "clear coat" of some type, possibly lacquer, and that's the reason you can't polish it. I would try using some regular paint stripper on it and see if that takes anything off. You should be able to tell right away. Then when it's stripped, go ahead and polish with your metal polish.
If this dosn't work, you may have to take it to someone who does this type of work. Many times on some types of cast brass, we have to polish with several different grades of rouge to bring out a shine.
 Good luck with your project.
