Question

Old Chair
I picked this chair up at a garage sale about 20 years ago.  I have always said I would eventually restore it.  I am not at all sure where to start.  The wood that makes the curve and arm rests is in pieces a little over one inch long pieced together to make the curves.  The legs are plain but it came with a foot stool that has clawish feet that someone covered to match the chair.  the fabric is tacked and its real fun to sit in.  where do I start and what on earth is this wierd wood piece thing?  any help would be great.

Thanks Sara

Answer
 Nice chair.
I don't know if there is a specific name for this style with the slant back but there are many of them out there.
The reason the curved section is made for smaller oieces of wood is to save costs. If you tried to make that curved piece out of one piece of wood, it would require a lot of bending and time. This way , the curve is formed while gluing then all they need to do is form the edge.
As far as a place to start, if this is your first project, I suggest you find a good upholster. This would not be a project for a first timer. There is to much detail in the button and tuft and being round for a novice to try. As far as the wood goes, when your ready to have it recovered, you can pull back the edge slightly and either use a stain/varnish, sand and recoat the edge or if it's really bad, strip it down and start over with a stain and finish.
Good Luck and thanks for the question
