Question

old desk with mirror
This piece of furniture was found in a bedroom; do you know what it was used for?  Thanking you again for your help, Marilyn

Answer
Hi Marlyn
Nice to hear from you.
What you have here is a "married" piece.
That simply means two seperate pieces not original to each other put together.
The top is an Eastlake style mirror and the bottom is a wash stand.
Both are the type of things I would seek out at auction.
They both have their original finish which of course needs replacing but they have not been tampered with.
I would not be surprised to find the mirror is solid walnut.
I just had another look at the picture (I've had several LOL).
And I'm starting to think the washstand top is not original as it has a pretty big overhang that is not normally seen.
But it does not take away from the stand at all and could be easily adjusted by cutting down.
A true fixer upper that I'd take home in a minute.
Hope this helps
Kind Regards

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
