Question
I have an old pedistal table that Ihave redone but I need to find the metal things under the table that allow it to slide open to put the leave in.  I do not know what it is called...  If I cant get new ones, then how can I get the old one to work, one side is totally rusted shut and wont slide.  Thanks

Answer
Hi Rhonda
Nice to hear from you.
First you must try to get the old slides useable.
Not sure which type you have but check to see if they can be removed.
All table slides can be easily removed but perhaps yours are stuck in such a position you cannot get access to the screws that hold them. But try.
If you can get them off, great.
Give them a good spray with WD40.
Let them sit a bit.
Use some steel wool to remove as much rust as you can and spray again.
You can also apply the WD40 with the slides on the table but hopefully they will come off as its easier to work on them.
If they are beyond repair, new ones can be purchased easily.
Most places that sell woodworking supplies carry them.
Here is one place

Hope this helps

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
