Question

Antique
Hello,

I have an antique buffet or sideboard table that I recently inherited.  Someone has cut round holes in the back that are about 2 in. in diameter.  You cannot see them unless you look at the back of the furniture.  My question is should I repair them myself or just leave them alone and how can I keep it consistant with whatever time period this piece is from.  Thank you for your time.

Answer
Hi Kristin
Nice to hear from you.
Forget about the holes being there.
Someone quite likley had something electrical inside and the cord went through there.
This is a very nice oak sideboard that someone refinished at some point in its life.
I would replace the knobs as I see some are missing.
The ones on the piece just don't look right.
Oak knobs would better suit I think and they are easy to find.
Hope this helps
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
