Question

antique dresser
Hi Eileen, I mistakenly let a friend paint an antique bedroom set of ours. The results were bad.  What can I use to remove the paint.  Attached is a pre-paint photo of the set.  She used a crackle medium w/wall paint.  Another option is to paint over it to cover it, but I need to smooth the areas of dried dripping paint.

Answer
Hi Carrie
Nice to hear from you.
What a shame the set was painted.
The only thing that will remove paint is paint stripper.
This crackle stuff is miserable to try to paint over and I suggest stripping, but if you must paint you will have to sand the crackle smooth.
And what a miserable job on this ornate set.
Good Luck with this...you'll need it LOL.
Kind Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
