Question
I have an old steamer trunk that I found and do not know if it is worth doing some repairs on.  Where the hinges are fastened to the back of the main body are loose and the previous owner used small nails on one side to secure the lid.

I cannot find any information about J. Thomas Boots, Shoes, and Trunks as listed on a sticker on the inside of the lid except for an advertisement card for sale on the internet.

It looks to be anywhere from the last nineteenth century to the early twentieth century, maybe older.

If you could let me know or point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it.

Thank you,

John Gee

Hi John
Nice to hear from you.
Here is a site where I hope you will find the info you seek.
Its a wonderful site for old trunk enthusiasts as well as a wealth of info on repairs, getting replacement parts etc.
Lots of humor too.

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
