Question

Chair with burlap and
Hi! I just picked this chair up today.  I took it out of someone's trash that was just about to be picked up.  I thought the chair was pretty and had potential.  When I flipped it over and pulled off some of the black material on the bottom I noticed it was filled with burlap straps and hay.  The fabric on top is stained and I was thinking of reupholstering it but I don't want to mess up an old piece and take away value if any.  Is this piece old? Should I attempt to reupholster it? Thank You

Answer
Hi Nikki
Nice to hear from you.
What a nice old chair. I would have grabbed it too LOL.
You never take away the value of an upholestried piece when a pro does it.
But you know Nikki this looks to be a fairly straight forward job to do yourself if you are satisifed with doing it the way it is..sags and all. I see no reason not to try.
You ask if the chair is old.
Well the hay stuffing certainly indicates its fairly old so it might be a good idea to check with one of our antique experts on that.
Fred Taylor is on the same page you found me.
Great Find
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
