Collectibles-General (Antiques)/Rusty Iron Bed

Question
I have a rusty iron bed. I like the look of it now but I dont want the rust to spread and I would like to put a sealer on it of some kind so it wont get rust on my linens.
Can I just put a sealer of some kind over the existing rust? If I can, what kind?
Thank You

Answer
Hi Cathy
Nice to hear from you.
If this bed is now indoors out of the damp, the rust will not spread any further.
I would not paint over rust until its well cleaned though.
I'd use mineral spirits and a rag.
This will only remove "rust dust".
It will not remove the actual look you like.
Then I would spray on a clear coat of lacquer or poly.
Hope this helps
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
