Collectibles-General (Antiques)/antique cutlery chest - unlockable!

Question
I inherited a wedding present given to my great-uncle on his wedding of a beautiful antique cutlery chest, with drawers that openafter you have turned two pillars on either side outwards.  I found a key that I thought fitted the chest, but then stupidly locked it, and I can't get the key in or out, neither can I unlock it, it is totally immovable.  Do I go to a locksmith - but what kind as I don't wish to have the chest broken, or do I go to an antique shop? Help!

Answer
Hi Carol
Nice to hear from you.
Most definately go to a locksmith.
You ask "what kind"..well a locksmith is a locksmith LOL.
They sell and repair locks.
An antique shop does not do this.
The chest sounds lovely and you are right to be concerned with getting it damaged. So stay with it while the locksmith has a look.
Good luck

Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
