AboutEileen Cronk Expertise I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc.
I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.
Experience I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
Question My boss wants to repair an old antique chest, that could be worth ALOT of money and wanted to make sure what something he used would not ruin it. What kind of glue would be best that would not eat away at the old antique wood? I have done some research and have found nothing that says any kind will, but wanted to get an experts advise.
Thank you.
Answer Hi Jenae
Nice to hear from you.
The proper glue is called "hide glue".
I have never heard of glue eating at wood.
And give your boss this advice for me.
If he is going to repair a chest that is worth a lot of money and does not know the proper glue he better leave the chest to a pro to fix.
I say this in all sincerity Jenae and not to be smart.
So often folks destroy lovely old things that are also valuable with improper work.
Maybe talk him into having the chest appraised before he touches it.
Good Luck
Kind Regards
Eileen
