Collectibles-General (Antiques)/old trunk

Question
I have my grandmothers old old trunk--black, I think it is some kind of heavy paper, but not sure.  How do I restore it without doing any damage?  Afraid to paint, don't know what to do first.

Answer
Hi Leona
Nice to hear from you.
Usually with trunks made from this material its best to leave as is.
But I understand your desire to spruce it up and make useable.
And often some of these old trunks look great with a bit of sprucing.
But I cannot call this a restoration as there is no way to restore this type of trunk.
If its black now, you can certainly repaint it.
I am sending you a link to a great site that I know you will enjoy.
Its all about fixing old trunks.

Hope this helps

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
